You may have heard about EMDR from friends, family, or even saw the interview of Prince Harry using it. But what is it, and how can it help me?

As human beings we go through life and experience different things. Our body stores these experiences, good and bad, as memories. Some distressing experiences can lead to trauma, depression, anxiety, and more because they were not processed by our mind, and so they are stored in a way that has negative effects on us.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to reprocess these memories and experiences until they become neutral or non-distressing. We can also use this stimulation to process and increase positive thoughts and beliefs to store in our memories and mind.

Trust m, I know it sounds different or unusual, but EMDR has been shown to be very effective in working with trauma as well as a wide variety of mental health problems! Thats why we love it so much! Check out this website for current research.

EMDR…What the heck is it?

Using EMDR in Therapy:

I use EMDR as a tool in our regular talk therapy though it is very different kind of tool, not like coping skills or behavior changes. I work with my clients to build up nervous system regulation skills that will be helpful in EMDR as making sure we can regulate is a big part of the reprocessing.

When you are ready to use the tool we can explore different memories or beliefs about yourself you would like to reprocesses and lower the distress around. This can include traumatic memories, times you feel anxious, nightmares, chronic pain, negative feelings about yourself, body image struggles, disordered eating, and so many more. I promise there is no problem too big or small here.

We then use a bilateral stimulation that works for you like eye movement, tapping, sound or something else. Your brain will process through experiences and thoughts and take you where you need to go, and as your therapist I will be there right beside you supporting you and making sure you are able to keep regulating. It’s always ok to stop when needed and take your time with processing.

Your brain and body have such powerful abilities to heal, and EMDR is a tool to harness those abilities! You will feel the memories become less distressing and you will feel the positive beliefs increase. It’s really hard to believe it until you try it.
