Find a Therapist That FitsYou
I get asked all the time “Paige, can you help me find a good therapist?”. I get it! Finding a person who you are going to be vulnerable with is an important decision. You may find yourself asking things like:
Where do I find a therapist?
What am I going to be doing in therapy?
How much will this cost?
How do I pick a therapist out of a list?
In this article you will learn a few tips to help you feel more confident in finding a therapist as well as tips to find someone that fits best with you.
What is your Problem?
The first step is getting a clear picture for yourself of what you are struggling with. Now I am not saying you need to know all your problems, diagnosis, etc. Just have a clear picture of what you are wanting to change in your life.
It may be that you are trying to not feel anxious all day every day. Maybe you are a new parent and remembering hurtful things from childhood as you raise your kiddo. It could be that you feel stressed about dating and finding someone.
Here are some questions to help you narrow it down:
What am I struggling with?
How long have I been struggling with this?
How is it impacting my life?
What have I already tried?
What does it feel like?
How do I find change in my life?
Some people change through telling their story and building a new one, others maybe change by finding what helps and doing more of it. Knowing how you experience change can help you find a therapist that works the same way.
Look up different types of therapies and find the ones that you connect with the most. Some could be narrative therapy, solution focused, EMDR, CBT, integrative holistic therapy, DBT, and may many more.
How do you want to pay?
Therapists all work a little differently in how they take pay. Some go through insurance, some cash pay, and others might do government assisted programs.
Knowing your insurance benefits, or how much you want to pay out of pocket can help you in narrowing your therapist choices.
What things make you feel comfortable?
You might feel comfortable with a young female therapist while another person could be triggered by them. What would you feel most comfortable with.
Here are some questions to help:
-Do I want online or in person therapy.
-Is there a gender identity, race, age, or sexual orientation that I would prefer?
Where can I go to find a therapist?
Now that you have answered the above questions, that means you are ready to find your therapist. Here are some common places you can narrow your list down.
1. Google – eg. therapists near me, or anxiety therapist in Las Vegas
2. Therapy Directory Listings- Psychology Today, Therapy Den, Zencare, and more
